Career and Technology Studies
Career and Technology Studies (CTS) enables students
to make reasoned and effective career decisions and
target efforts to meet their goals. Students will have opportunities to expand their knowledge about careers, occupations, and job opportunities, as well as required education and/or training. Competencies achieved
by mastering CTS course outcomes will allow students
to make relevant connections with work and/or
post-secondary training.
What Is CTS?
CTS is a provincially authorized curriculum for
Alberta secondary schools designed on a pathways model to offer
flexible programming using 1-credit courses. The CTS program
is designed to develop
skills that senior high school students
can apply in
their daily lives when preparing for entry into the
workplace
or further learning.
Implementing CTS
School administrators determine which CTS clusters
or occupational area(s) are made available to
students
by
reviewing school authority priorities
and
community needs.
Health and Safety
CTS courses address safety and risk management by identifying specific elements in CTS course parameters (e.g., equipment, facilities, instructional qualifications) that need to be in place to support safe learning. Learning outcomes in each CTS course require safety awareness and the demonstration of safe practices.
Resources
Student and teacher resources are high quality resources that support student learning and the implementation of Kindergarten to Grade 12 programs of study and educational initiatives. Student and teacher resources may include print and digital formats used in a variety of settings and delivery modes to facilitate the implementation of provincial courses, programs of study, and educational initiatives.
Knowledge and Employability
Like all learners, students who are enrolled in Knowledge and Employability courses have their strengths and diverse learning needs. Alberta Education has set out specific enrollment criteria and possible learning indicators to assist in determining the appropriateness of Knowledge and Employability courses for individual Alberta students. K&E courses provide students with opportunities to experience success and become well-prepared for employment, further post-secondary studies, engaged citizenship, and life-long learning.
