Benchmarks Levels

Communicative language teaching involves developing language proficiency through interactions embedded in meaningful contexts (subject-area learning).

This approach to teaching provides authentic opportunities for learning that go beyond repetition and memorization of grammatical patterns in isolation.

A central concept of the communicative approach to language teaching is communicative competence, the learner’s ability to understand and use language to communicate effectively in authentic (rather than simulated) social and school environments.

Each benchmark level in Benchmarks 2.0 represents a degree of language complexity and demand, from beginning to advanced language proficiency, depending on the language development and academic language expectations of the grade-level.

Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten - 3 levels, from beginner to intermediate.

Grade 1- 4 levels from beginner to advanced, separated out for developmental purposes.

Levels A and B - emerging literacy levels for students with limited formal schooling or gaps in their schooling.
