Definition

Balance can mean either of the following:

Example 1

In the illustration, the scale has a five-kilogram weight on the left as well as a three-kilogram weight and a two-kilogram weight on the right. Since 3 kg + 2 kg = 5 kg, the total weight on each side of the scale are equal and there is balance (5 kg = 5 kg).

Example 2

In the illustration, the scale has a five-kilogram weight on the left as well as a three-kilogram weight and a four-kilogram weight on the right. Since 3 kg + 4 kg = 7 kg, the total weight on each side of the scale are NOT equal and there is an imbalance (5 kg < 7 kg).
