To subitize is to immediately recognize how many items are in a small group without counting.

This ability is usually applied to groups of objects where

• there are usually four or fewer items, where the items are NOT in any pattern
• there are a small number of items arranged in a pattern (e.g., dots on a die, domino, and five or ten frames)
