A population is an entire defined group.

Statistics are used to describe a population and to make predictions about a population. When a population is large, usually a sample of the population is used to represent the entire population.

Some examples of populations could be defined as:

• all of the students at a given school
• all of the people in the world who are Canadians
• all of the people living in Alberta
