Imbalance
Definition

When weights placed on each side of the beam of a scale aren't equal, there is an imbalance. Balance has not been achieved.

Example 1

In the illustration, the scale has a five-kilogram weight on the left as well as a two-kilogram weight on the right. Since the weight on each side of the scale are NOT equal, there is an imbalance (5 kg > 2 kg).

Example 2

In the illustration, the scale has a five-kilogram weight on the left as well as a three-kilogram weight and a one-kilogram weight on the right. Since 3 kg + 1 kg = 4 kg, the total weight on each side of the scale are NOT equal and there is an imbalance (5 kg > 4 kg).

Example 3

In the illustration, the scale has a five-kilogram weight on the left as well as a three-kilogram weight and a four-kilogram weight on the right. Since 3 kg + 4 kg = 7 kg, the total weight on each side of the scale are NOT equal and there is an imbalance (5 kg < 7 kg).

Example 4

In the illustration, the scale has a five-kilogram weight on the left as well as a three-kilogram weight and atwo-kilogram weight on the right. Since 3 kg + 2 kg = 5 kg, the total of the weight on each side of the scale are equal and there is balance (5 kg = 5 kg).
