Equations with Letter Variables
Strand: Patterns and Relations
(Variables and Equations)
Outcomes: 3 and 4
Strand: Shape and Space
(Measurement)
Outcome: 3
Curriculum Focus
The changes to the curriculum targeted by this
sample include:
- The general outcome in the Patterns
and Relations (Variables and Equations)
strand focuses on representing algebraic
expressions in multiple ways, which is
the same as the previous mathematics
curriculum.
- The general outcome in the Shape and
Space (Measurement) strand focuses on
using direct and indirect measurement
to solve problems, whereas the previous
mathematics curriculum focused on describing
and comparing everyday phenomena, using
either direct or indirect measurement.
- The specific outcome in the Shape and
Space (Measurement) strand focuses on
developing and applying a formula for
determining the perimeter of polygons,
area of rectangles and volume of right
rectangular prisms, which is the same
as the previous math curriculum. The
previous mathematics curriculum also
included finding the surface area of
right rectangular prisms with and without
a formula.
Equations with Letter Variables addresses the following outcomes from the Program of Studies:
What is a Planning Guide?
Planning Guides are a tool for teachers to use in designing instruction and assessment that focuses on developing and deepening students' understanding of mathematical concepts. This tool is based on the process outlined in Understanding by Design, by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe.
The following steps will help you through the Planning Guide:
