Tracking Sheet
The tracking sheet can be used to monitor English proficiency levels and document student language proficiency growth over time. The levels represent a continuum of language proficiency, and teachers should consult with colleagues and use professional judgement in interpreting and applying levels.
Teachers can use the tracking sheet to record student language proficiency assessment levels and other information
- at intake
- at reporting periods
- at the end of the school year
- on an ongoing basis
The fillable tracking sheet can be used or tracking information may be captured digitally using student information systems.
- Additional notes may be added to inform benchmark assessment (annotations from student work samples), programming (student language learning goals, effective instructional strategies, appropriate learning supports, subject-area resources), and/or report card comments (language development progress).
- If additional years of support are required, an additional tracking sheet can be used.
- The paper version of the tracking sheet may be used or any digital variation that the school authority has created.
Tracking Considerations
The information from the tracking sheet can be used to
- plan explicit language instruction in any subject area
- choose appropriate materials and resources for the EAL learner based on the language proficiency level they are working at
EAL learners progress at different rates.
- Some students may be progressing quickly.
- Some students may be progressing slowly despite significant explicit instruction and supports.
- Other students may require support at a particular level for 18 or more months and require explicit language instruction, differentiated materials and instruction, increased support, or an in-depth assessment to further determine their learning needs.
