Worldviews: Beginning Together Activity
Total Time: Approx. 60 minutes
Context: Large Groups
Strategy: Think-Pair-Share
Participants are introduced to the appropriate protocol for inviting Elders into the classroom and use a think-pair-share activity to reflect on the impact of First Nations, Métis and Inuit protocols and worldviews on teaching practice.
Overview of Interactive
This beginning journey activity introduces the concept of protocol—an important and necessary step in beginning to understand the diversity of First Nations, Métis and Inuit worldviews.
The scenario presents Terry, a Grade 5 teacher who has decided to invite an Elder into his classroom to present traditional knowledge to his students. However, Terry doesn’t know who to ask or how to go about inviting an Elder into his classroom. The next screen presents four options for Terry to choose from. Subsequent screens present consequences from selecting each choice.
Reflection Statement
How could an understanding of cultural protocols and worldviews impact your teaching practice?
Suggested Activity: Think-Pair-Share
Individually participants pick one of the four options offered to Terry in the scenario and find out what the expected result is. After participants navigate through the resource, each participant writes about what happened and how he or she felt about it.
Form pairs and ask participants to share experiences. In addition, ask them to write down all the questions that are raised in this activity.
In a large group, participants share their journeys, reflections and questions from this activity. Ensure that all four interactive choices are discussed in the large group.
Encourage the participants to share their insights on protocol. Ask participants to comment on how they can apply what they learned from this resource to their own teaching practices.
