A good health and safety culture endures and provides the necessary impetus for ensuring the personal health and safety of all stakeholders. In addition, mechanisms to ensure continuous improvement must be in place. Establishing a culture of health and safety requires the attention of everyone involved in regard to

  • safety policies, procedures, and protocols
  • facilities, tools, equipment, and materials
  • personal protective equipment
  • instructional planning
  • personal training at all levels of the organization
  • classroom management
  • appropriate training needs of both teachers and students
  • due diligence

It is important to note that the CTS teacher and/or instructor, together with the administration of the facility, is responsible for ensuring that the CTS instructional area is healthy and safe for both teachers and students and is in compliance with applicable legislation. This is achieved by doing the following:

  • Understand how health and safety is addressed in the CTS curriculum.

  • Review current health and safety practices in CTS learning environments, both on- and off-campus.

  • Develop and maintain effective health and safety systems that align with protocols required by OHS, the school jurisdiction, and the school.

  • Plan for the design and/or upgrade of CTS learning environments.

  • Plan professional development and in-service activities related to health and safety.
